« Effects of drought on the growth, vitality and mortality of Mediterranean forests in South-Eastern France«

Abstract

Mediterranean forest ecosystems face increasingly long and frequent drought periods, which affect their functioning and the services they provide. However, our ability to predict their current and future response to drought is limited, which constrains the development of adaptive forest management strategies.

Based on observational data collected along environmental gradients, and on experimental data from a common garden and from a highly monitored site with rainfall manipulation, I will address these points focusing on mixed Pinus halepensisQuercus ilex forests in South-Eastern France.

In this presentation, I will specifically detail (1) how drought impacts tree primary and secondary growth at both short- and long-terms; (2) how these changes in tree functioning and structure modify tree vitality and mortality risk; and (3) the environmental drivers that predispose this decline in tree vitality. To end on a more positive note, I will describe how forest management can modulate this increasing impact of drought on forest dynamics (e.g., by thinning, stand mixing, or replacement/enrichment by more drought-tolerant provenances or species).

« Remote sensing applied to forest mortality assessment : the case study of an unprecedented mortality event in mature Pine plantations in Argentina »

Abstract

The applications of remote sensing techniques are under continuous development. In the present seminar we present their possibilities in relation to studies of forest mortality, in particular to commercial plantations. In contrast to studies focused on natural forests, little evidence exists on the impact of “hotter-drought” events on commercial forestry species planted outside their native range. With the aid of remote sensing, complemented with field surveys, we explored an unexpected and regionally-distributed tree mortality event that occurred recently in commercial pine species across the Mesopotamian region of Argentina, South America. The event was associated with a hotter-drought period during the 2021-2022 warm season preceded by three years of drought and was spatially heterogeneous at regional and local scales. We used Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 multispectral images and Random Forests algorithms to map canopy mortality timing, rate, and magnitude in Pinus taeda and their association with environmental and stand characteristics at the local scale to determine which conditions make these productive systems more vulnerable to extreme climatic events. We found that landscape characteristics and previous conditions are important drivers of the occurrence and mortality rate in the forest stands studied. The methodology could be applied in other systems serving as a useful tool to  define the areas more suitable for climate-smart forest management as well as to build mortality-risk maps in productive landscapes.

Les Séminaires MiDi : Webinaire international – Laboratoire International Associé FORESTIA

Suite à l’API MiDi lancé au printemps 2023 et au financement « MiDi évènement », les bénéficiaires de ces financements et le RTR MiDi proposent une série de séminaires ouverts aux membres du réseau. Le second séminaire de cette série aura lieu le 19 Octobre 2023, à 15h salle, Dominique King à l’INRAE d’Orléans. Ce duplex entre la France et l’Argentine réunira à l’occasion de son 5ème anniversaire, les membres du Laboratoire international associé FORESTIA . L’objectif de ce duplex sera de présenter l’offre de collaboration internationale des quatre partenaires du LIA FORESTIA : l’INTA en Argentine, l’université de Huanta au Pérou, le Colegio de Postgraduados de Texcoco au Mexique et l’INRAE en France. Le moment se voudra interactif et les participants sont invités à se munir de leur téléphone portable équipé d’un lecteur de QR codes!

« Community-based forest management in Mexico and climate change mitigation »

Abstract

The functional role of forests ecosystems in climate change mitigation is well recognized by fixing atmospheric carbon (C). However, they are also vulnerable to natural and human-induced disturbances. Forests may act as sinks or sources depending on the balance between atmospheric CO2 emissions and removals. Nonetheless, C dynamics in forest ecosystems are complex and multifactorial. Understanding these dynamics is essential for managing forests sustainably and preserving C stocks. Questions such as to what extent does the carbon cycle change when a forest is harvested? What is the behavior of managed forests for timber production in terms of CO2 emissions and removals? Are the forests under community-based forest management sustainable? are necessary to answer, to determine precisely the magnitude to which forests under forest management are capable of removing atmospheric CO2, and therefore mitigating climate change. Here I will use as a model the Intensive Carbon Monitoring Site Atopixco in central Mexico, to show some results regarding C dynamics in intensively managed forest for timber production. The aim of this site is to generate detailed information regarding C stocks and flux rates that may not be easily quantified over large areas, and to analyze processes of CO2 uptake and release that can help explain observed changes that result from forest management activities and natural disturbances. Of particular interest is the community-based forest management for timber production in Mexico, since most of such forested land is owned by ejidos and communities, where they are actively involved in decision-making regarding forestry operations and forest conservation.

« Drivers of diversity structuration in black poplar (Populus nigra L.) ? »

Abstract

Black poplar (Populus nigra L.) is among the tree species having the largest natural distribution in Europe, from West Great Britain to West Asia, and from the foot of the Ural Mountains to the North of Africa. Thus, this species is potentially subjected to a wide variation of climatic conditions. Previous studies on variability of traits in this species showed structure and different distribution patterns depending on the trait, demonstrating potential local adaptation. In the last decade, we have developed molecular tools to study the factors shaping the diversity of the species. Today, these tools allow us to detect patterns of selection along the genome, to identify polymorphism involved in adaptative traits, to model demographic history of the species, and to evaluate how gene flow impact structure of populations. These molecular tools and results constitute the toolbox for breeding and conservation programs of black poplar.

« How vulnerable are the high mountain forests of Mexico to climate change ? »

Abstract

The rapid change in the chemical composition of the atmosphere in the last century, especially in the CO2 concentration, has had important consequences on the energy balance of the planet, with direct impacts on the processes of the biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. Collectively, the imbalances in energy fluxes are the driving agent for what we know as climate change. Scientific literature show that the global climate is being increasingly more erratic, modifying the functionality of many ecosystems. Forests around the world are experiencing changes in their productivity, structure, composition, resistance, and resilience. Some high and middle elevation forests in Mexico growing between 3200 and 4000 m and represented by Pine (Pinus hartwegii Lindl.) and fir (Abies religiosa Kunth Schltdl. et Cham.) are also showing some impacts related to climate change. One important question to address is How vulnerable are these forests to climate change? The answer is not easy, however, combining results from some independent past studies we have made with students and colleagues, we can provide some insights about the vulnerability of these forests, considering the following axes: (1) Vulnerability related to soil depth and water and nutrients supply; available soil P reserves will become critical  in these volcanic soils; (2) Vulnerability related to nutrient circulation; nutrient circulation and exports due to tree removal are important, (3) Vulnerability due to variations in water use efficiency; although plants could benefit from the CO2 increases, saving water not necessarily results in higher tree growth;  and (4) Vulnerability due to other external disturbances such as pests and forest fires; the time for tree growth recovery is getting longer as climate change progress.  Discussing the vulnerability of the forests according to these four axes can give us some insights about the forest functioning and the effects of climate change. In the last part of this talk I will comment on the urgency of taking actions to protect forests from the threats of climate change, involving the communities who live in the forest and who are the owners of these lands.

« High Andean Forests: challenges and opportunities »

Abstract

High Andean forests are biodiversity hotspots that play an important role in the provisioning of vital ecosystem services such as regulation of the water cycle, formation and conservation of soils, support of biodiversity, among others. Polylepis is the dominant genus in the high Andean forest vegetation and they have a crucial ecological role. Polylepis forests harbor unique biodiversity, including several highly specialized, often range-restricted and threatened bird species. However, these forests are highly endangered by climate change, habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic disturbances, and many of their biological aspects are still unknow. It has been estimated that over 90% of Polylepis forests have already been lost in Peru and Bolivia. The high Andes are expected to undergo severe changes in the coming decades because of on-going land-use change and climatic change likely threatening Polylepis forests even more. Polylepis forests have a low ability to colonize dens grasslands and low seed dispersal ability, severely limiting the ability of the forest to spread and to track climatic conditions. As a result of all the above, Polylepis forests have been listed as one of the most endangered woodlands ecosystems in the world and the conservation of the remaining forests stands has given high priority. Taking a critical look at the limitations of current knowledge of the biological aspects of Polylepis forests and proposing a research agenda to fill the knowledge gaps will help to the conservation action of these forests.

« Drought stress tolerance strategies of Prosopis alba, a key specie from « Gran Chaco Americano »

Abstract

Drought is one of the major abiotic stresses that restrict terrestrial plant growth. Predicted climate change in subtropical regions raises concerns about the ability of forest ecosystems to cope with longer, more severe and unpredictable summer drought periods. 

The Gran Chaco Americano extends into tropical and temperate zones and is one of the major wooded grasslands in South America, being currently one of the ecosystems with the highest deforestation rates of the world. Among important Chaco tree species, Prosopis spp, Algarrobos (Mesquite), are well-known to be tolerant to drought, having a xeromorphic leaf structure and an adapted root structure that can cope with temporal and spatial variability in soil water availability. In particular, Prosopis alba is the most widely distributed species of the genus, grows throughout the semi-arid and humid Chaco region of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, covering areas from 500 to 1200 mm of average annual precipitation of summer concentration.

P. alba is distributed in contrasting environments, and we expect different strategies towards drought stress and even adaptations to particular local conditions. Our objective was to evaluate the strategies of Prosopis alba to tolerate drought stress and to identify if these strategies are under natural selection. By combining a macroscopic characterization (yellowing and senescence) after water deprivation in a controlled common garden experiment with open pollinated families and the distribution of neutral genetic variation (microsatellites) between and within P. alba populations we attempt to address the following questions: Do the different P. alba provenances growing in contrasting environments with respect to precipitation and temperature have different strategies to tolerate stress? Are there genetic differences between these provenances that may indicate adaptive processes?

In the context of climate change, information regarding Prosopis alba provenances tolerant to drought becomes more important, particularly for forest management and future (re)forestation.

« Adaptation of Forests and Agroforests to Climate Change: A new large-scale, long-term, global international initiative«

Abstract

The INRAE International Priority Program “Adaptation of Forests and Agroforests to Climate Change” is a new large-scale, long-term, global international initiative.

In response to the increasingly worrying, even catastrophic, state of the world’s forests and the uncertainty that accompanies their future, INRAE and a group of international experts have just launched a new large-scale, global initiative to collaborate on the development of future science-based adaptation solutions.

Current and future tree species ranges, geographical distribution of climate, disturbances as well as patterns and processes of biological invasions do not follow country borders and make internationalization of research a mandatory step. International collaboration gives access to study contexts, models and resources not necessarily available locally while increasing the power and the significance of experimentation and of research outcomes. 

Several actions are currently being carried out or are in preparation, with the aim of establishing this initiative on a large scale and of developing it in the form of several complementary international research projects.

Abstract

Climate and environmental changes are evident throughout the planet and the Patagonian Andes are not an exception.  While widespread warming associated with Global Climate Change is the best documented process, other changes in climate, including more severe extreme events such as droughts and heat waves, have been clearly identified. Recently, extensive patches of mortality and forest decline have been observed in centuries-old native forests in the Patagonian Andes, representing a new component of the Andean landscape in response to climatic events of a magnitude rarely documented in the environmental history of the region.

In this context, it is interesting to ask how different in frequency and intensity the current droughts are in relation to those that occurred in the last centuries or millennia in the Patagonian Andes. Are the current extreme climatic events part of the natural climatic variability of the Andean-Patagonian environments, or do they represent unusual events that, not having occurred in the past, introduce irreversible changes in the forest dynamics of the Andes? In this presentation we combine high-resolution paleoclimatic records with climate scenarios to investigate changes in extreme drought regimes and their connections with forest mortality and decay processes in the region. In a perspective longer than 500 years, provided by the combination of dendrochronological records and climate simulations, we analyze the temporal evolution of extreme droughts and their potential impacts on the dynamics of Patagonian forests during the 21st century.
